    Q:  What is detoxification?

    A:  The liver has many functions including filtering blood and removing toxins and wastes that are generated from the foods we eat. For example, when we consume protein (found in meat, fish, dairy, or seeds and nuts) this is broken down in the liver to amino acids that are used by the body but urea which is also a by-product of protein is toxic if it builds up in the bloodstream so it is collected by the liver and passed to the kidneys to be excreted in the urine. This is an example of detoxification - the process of making something less toxic. Drugs, chemicals, alcohol that we consume all need to be processed by the liver and detoxified so the unused compounds can be safely excreted from the body.


  • Q:  What herbal extracts are in Liverguard+?

    A:  Milk Thistle protects the liver from oxidative damage resulting from alcohol, drug and chemical exposure. Milk Thistle in conjunction with Turmeric assists with balancing the Phase I and Phase II detoxification pathways so toxins are completely broken down and all metabolites safely excreted from the body.

    Turmeric also has anti-inflammatory and powerful antioxidant activity in the body. Schisandra is an antioxidant herb that can improve the detoxifying capacity of the liver and is also a ‘tonic herb’ helping the body adapt to stress. Globe Artichoke stimulates production of bile from the gallbladder which supports healthy cholesterol levels and efficient fat metabolism and also has strong antioxidant activity. Dandelion Root is a ‘bitter’ herb and stimulates the liver to assist with detoxification and other liver functions.

    Q:  Why are antioxidants important?

    A:  Antioxidants help protect the body from oxidative stress by neutralising free radicals.  Antioxidants are highly concentrated in the liver because the process of detoxification creates ‘intermediate’ compounds which need to be neutralised by the antioxidants. If we are lacking in antioxidants we can sometimes experience ‘detox symptoms’.
